The D260 and Aspire One 533 are only one-inch thick and have the Intel Atom N450 and N455 (1.66GHz) as options when it comes to choosing the CPU (the 533 can also boast the Atom N475).
A slender netbook with a great display, but its battery life simply isn’t good enough to make a first choice for those working on the go Acer’s newest netbook is placed towards the budget end of the market, though for netbooks it’s a pretty narrow market admittedly, with hard disk size and build-quality being the main differences between the top and bottom. Acer’s success with the D260 is to build a cut-price netbook that still looks just 24mm high the D260 is slimmer than any netbook we've seen recently. Most of the laptop is slimmer still, but the six-cell battery creates a bulge at the far edge. To minimise its impact, the battery protrudes above the line of the keyboard as well below the base, with the lid shaped to fold neatly down around the upper bump. The lid also folds nearly flat, ideal for use on your lap in cramped conditions, such as most airline the dimensions should please everyone, the finish divided opinion in the office. For starters, the centre of the lid is emblazoned with Aspire One in big silver letters, which feels a bit naff. Behind this is a subtle grey 3D grid pattern, which doesn’t stand out overly against the glossy black lid. This is repeated, but more strikingly, on the palm rest and again on the glossy black panel that makes up most of the base. All this lends a more striking graphic element to what could have been a more sophisticated and understated design. It’ll appeal to some, but not display certainly didn’t divide opinion – it’s excellent. The bright LED-backlighting provides consistency into the corners of the screen. Colours are vibrant and contrast is good. Of course, it suffers from the same limited 1,024x600 resolution as other displays, making everything feel rather cramped. Above the screen is a webcam for online video on such a slender netbook, the keyboard has little travel. The flat keys give you the maximum possible amount of space to hit, but make it harder to distinguish between them. It’s not the best netbook keyboard, but we wouldn’t be put off buying the D260 because of it. The touchpad is subtly integrated into the palm rest, your finger glides over the surface and there’s a big seesaw button below with a satisfying click. There are the usual three USB ports and a memory card reader, but no HDMI output for easy connection to a TV, with only a VGA its low price, it’s not surprising to find a small 160GB hard disk inside the D260. Most netbooks now use larger 250GB drives, though you’ll still need external storage if you want to store a large media library of videos , music and photos. This netbook comes with Windows 7 Starter for Small Notebook PCs, so you can't upgrade the RAM over 1GB without upgrading the operating an Intel Atom N450 and 1GB of RAM, this netbook performs identically in our benchmarks to practically every other. It’s suitable for web browsing, office tasks, and simple touch ups to the odd photo, but little battery has 4400mAh battery is smaller than some, notably the 5900mAh example in Samsung’s N230. Its battery life in our light usage test was just under six hours, well short of what many, admittedly chunkier and slightly heavier, netbooks can manage. Whatever the reasons, the D260 wouldn’t be our first choice if working on the move is a nice touch is the D260’s power supply. Not only is it very small, but the plug connector can be attached at any of four different angles. So you can always plug your netbook into a crowded multi-plug adaptor.

That is quite a fair price, as Netbooks with configurations like this one cost around Rs. 15,000, plus a Tata Photon+ dongle would cost you about Rs. 2,000. The AOD260 is a pretty decent buy if you're looking for a typical Netbook that'll save you the trouble of carrying a USB 3G dongle every time. Another way of looking at it is this - a built-in 3G modem means you cannot enable any other PC with its wireless broadband internet (unless you make this netbook behave like a Wi-fi router using apps like Connectify). But then keep your expectations very modest with this one, as the combination of 1GB RAM, single-core Atom processor and Windows 7 Starter cannot take too much load. Its identical cousin without the 3G powers, the Gateway LT23, costs Rs. 22,700 + taxes. Although the 2GB RAM and 320GB hard drive sounds like a bargain, we think it's somewhat a sore one when you compare it to the HP Mini 210, which has all of that, plus a faster GHz Intel Atom processor, not to mention a much better designed keyboard. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games). » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List. Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a GHz Atom).N450: Intel Atom CPU for Netbooks with integrated memory controller and GMA 3150 GPU. The performance of the system should be only minimally faster than the previous Atom N280 / GMA 950 Power saving Atom processor (even more power efficient than the N-series) with GHz and therefore a bit faster than usually GHz clocked Dual core Atom with a TDP of only Watt. Because of the slow clock speed of GHz it may be sometimes even slower than a N465 Atom CPU.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors. » To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List. kg: This weight is typical for big tablets, small subnotebooks, ultrabooks and convertibles with a 10-11 inch kg: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
